How to Make a Wardrobe Colour Palette 🌷 (Closet Curation Series Ep. 3)
In this episode we are covering, what colours suit you, how to match colours in your outfits as well as how to create your colour palette.
When it comes to colour, theres a lot of information out there on the internet, and I wanted to share the steps I took myself to understand what colours might suit me. As well as sharing the steps I took to create my colour palette (which was the missing link to finding my style!) However, I am not professionally trained in this area. I have only just started my seasonal colour analysis education, so I didn’t go deep into this in today’s video. Well...I disagree with the fast fashion point. I don't thing you should state that those brands make a huge profit as expense of underpaid workers. Do you have any proof of that? I've been working for one of those brands for long and I can assure you that workers are not paid any worse or better than they are in other more expensive/exclusive brands. On the contrary, fast fashion is creating a lot of work positions which is something really needed in many countries. The huge profit those brands are making is coming from the huge sales volume they have. As simple as that. This is because they offer fashion trends with an affordable price. For people who love fashion but cannot afford more expensive brands, fast fashion brands are life savers and they are providing people with an opportunity they wouldn't have otherwise. Regarding the environment, another statement you shouldn't make without proving it. At least, could you proof that many other expensive brands are not doing exactly the same? I agree with the idea of investing in higher quality pieces that will last for long, but you also get bored of those once you have wore them for a while + if you are a person with an active social life or someone who loves fashion, you don't like wearing the same item once and again to every single event. To sum up, very useful video if it wasn't because of that point. I understand what you were trying to say. But I don't think advising people not buying in fast fashion brands is the solution. Thank you for your content anyways! I've recently found your channel and I'm really enjoying it!😊
My favourite tip has been the one about using 3 colours I'm each outfit. I taught mu daughter and she looks amazing when she wears 3 colours. It's so much nicer than 1-2 colours or.too many colours like I previously dressed.
Watching from Australia 🇦🇺 Nice to watch another Aussie.❤
Love this series!!
I love wearing (off) white, beige/light taupe and light blue the most. So those are my staple colours. I also have a very light lilac sweater that i like. :) Where is your navy v-neck cardigan from please? ^^
Great advice!! So I did the vein color test a while ago and came to the conclusion that my veins are bright light blue. But that didn't feel right at all. I didn't associate my feautures with either cool or bright. So: I took a picture of my face and put it into canva and estracted (or whatever the word is) my natural colors from the photo and realized that my colors are warm and muted and after some research i came to the conclusion that I am a true autumn. I told my mom about it and she looked at me and just shook her head and pointed out that I am have copper red hair and that I tan easily and have more freckles than most people have brain cells... so why go through so much trouble to find out the obvious - that i am a warm, muted color type. So I guess my tip here is don't overthink it and also, keep your momma in the loop 😂 cause they knoww
Thank you for this video series! I've been finding inspiration for my wardrobe from you and really appreciate the step by step series!
This was incredibly helpful, Emily. I love colour in my wardrobe, and agree that having around 9 or 10 is a great number. Your new blouse is so flattering on you and has so many of your colours in the material. What a great find. Thank you 😄. This series is amazing ❤
Another great video Emily! 🤗Knowing our season is very helpful to stick to a color palette that suits our skintone and avoid bad purchases. I am a cool season and I am naturally attracted to the colors that suit me the most. Love your blouse! 😍I found a similar one in burgundy with navy blue flowers online a couple of years ago for 5$ US. I still wear this blouse every fall and winter. My favorite color is navy blue so it matches my navy blue skirt, pants, blazer, etc. 🥰
Loving this series!
Great Video again ❤ I'm discovering a new world with these series...could you please put the link where you buy the color wheel??thank you😊
Hi Emily, I am enjoying this series a lot. I have several shades of blue and green, do each of those shades count as a color?
3:18 - the colour palette I have been building over the last couple of years or so has those _exact_ shades of terracotta, yellow and olive green in, as well as a couple of pieces in a dusty rose colour and some sage green. (Yep, I'm a warm-toned Autumn). I am so glad that the colours that are on-trend right now are more warm-toned, it's been really hard to find a good sage green and banana or honey yellow; until recently the light greens were more mint and the pale yellows were pretty much lemon, both of which look awful on me!
What a great series! I'm learning so much! Thank you!
I wanted to add that Adobe has a free website on which you can play around with the colour wheel. Very helpful!
Oh amazing! 🫶 I had no idea! Thank you for sharing this.
I do tend to gravitate towards the neutral tones but I do like a bit of colour, ie lilac, burgundy and green. That blouse looks lovely on you 🙂
Beautiful colours! Similar to me, I like neutrals most and have a few more colourful pieces to add with them.
And thank you 🥰🙏🩷
One problem??? Just because we have the perfect colour palette doesn't mean we can actually find the clothes in those colours. My colours are soft and cool but most clothes are bright or neutral.
Oh yes this is such a good point. It can be sooo much harder to actually source the exact colours!! I heard someone talk about it once, saying that they understood and accept that in summer they couldn’t buy many clothes and in winter they could buy more. But some years, even in winter the right colours weren’t on trend for them and they just had to accept it. I think finding common neutrals that suit you for those moments is probably my most helpful advice at this time 🩷
Also, finding brands like Colourful Standard, that do lots of different ranges of colours. And just spending a lot of time searching online.
I hear you! I've only recently been able to find pieces in the shades of green and yellow that work best with my skin tone because until recently pale greens were mint green not sage and the only pastel yellow seemed to be lemon which has far too much blue in it for me. It's worth looking second-hand for things, and being patient - if a colour has been popular once, it will be again and in the meantime it'll be available second-hand in charity shops, Depop, eBay or Vinted.
@@Teverell100% agree
YES you are so right! So when you do come across something in that color, GRAB IT!!!! For many years, here in Japan, green wasn't very popular and never in muted or pastel hues. Then suddenly, about two years ago, green flooded the market, especially a soft mint green which is the color of my eyes. I made sure to pick up many pieces that I am enjoying even now, when that color is no longer on sale!!
I think both the jackets look nice but it is a how you feel and you need to be happy with what you decide 🙂
Exactly 🙏🩷 so true at the end of the day, it’s all about how you feel
Enjoying this series Emily. I've not commented before but have been watching your content for over a year. Your pretty light yellow cardigan would wash me out (cool tone) 😒 Lovely on you, also love your overall style 😊
Aww. Thank you so much. I am so grateful for you watching all this time and commenting 🙏🙏🙏 I’m really glad you are enjoying the series too! Xoxo
First time watching one of your videos and I have to say you are so beautiful and gorgeous❤😊
Aw 🙏🩷 thank you that’s really kind. Hope you enjoy and stick around! Xoxo

This topic can be overwhelming, don’t overcomplicate it for yourself and get stuck in ‘analysis paralysis.’ X 💕 Download the workbook here: mailchi.mp/emilyelizabethmay/closet-curation-series-free-workbook #confusedtocurated
Thursday, Friday & Saturday ❤
My colour palette is: black/grey/white, emerald, burgundy, rose, and I’d love to add navy, but it just doesn’t seem to be around in pieces I love.
I’m loving this series so far! I dress elevated, pretty and comfortable with an ability to be uniquely creative. Neutral tones dominate with highlights of pink and feminine patterns. My style is easy going, yet put-together for an effortless chic weekend look.
This video is perfection! I really appreciate how relaxed this was - I’m totally going to use my egg cartons for things:) great idea and so eco friendly
I'm really thankful for stumbling upon your video while I'm still working on improving my style. It totally made my day and then I decided to subscribe! ❤️
I made a bit of mistake last year of trying to build up my wardrobe from practically nothing, I put too much emphasis on fantasy character and watching the wrong influencer for my style, Lydia tomlinson
Sounds like we had a very similar experience! 🩷 hope you’ve started to find your authentic style now 🫶
@@EmilyElizabethMay umm kind of, I am just not rushing and adding pieces here and there, I like a mixture of thrifting and normal shops
@@angelofchrist4494 slow and steady, that’s a good plan 🩷🩷🙏
Does anyone know of other pieces like that black dress? I love it but it's sold out! The feminine sleeves and the versatility - I'm obsessed.
Oh it’s sold out is it! I’m almost certain they will do it again?.. does it say anything about a re-stock? It’s a style they’ve been doing for a while
@@EmilyElizabethMay Oh good - I did sign up for the waitlist. Thanks for your response! It's beautiful on you.
I actually do wear dresses to do hard work, women used to do farm work in dresses. I tie up my dresses, or “gird my loins”, which is your skirts pulled through your legs and tied up.
Ohhh amazing!! 😍 I love that!
My words are comfortable, minimalist (modern clean lines overall), and casual chic.
My main colors are blue and pink (raspberry) with gray (charcoal) as a main neutral. I’m a type of summer with contrast, probably a cool summer close to cool winter.
This is so interesting. I wish more videos were like this. How to use what we have, when something doesn't work, how to know what does work and if we can fix what doesn't. I so appreciate videos that are not hauls. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and ideas! 😊
great series
All summer I tend to live in tunic dresses that hit somewhere between mid thigh and just above my knee. I've never really understood why I felt like they were so flattering, but it's totally a rule of thirds! I'm quite long of rib and my natural waist is pretty low on my frame, so I've never gotten the other way to work outside of something like an empire waist maxi dress. Thanks for the "aha" moment!
I’ve just discovered your channel and am loving it. I moved from London to Melbourne in my early/mid 20s and then from Melbourne to country Victoria in my late 20s. That last move is where I noticed the biggest shift in dressing. I had to tone down my ‘dressiness’ quite a bit because Country Vic is just so casual and not necessarily in a stylish way. I didn’t want to stand out like a sore thumb but I also didn’t want to loose my excitement in getting dressed and feeling good in my clothes. I’m still working on it and try to have pieces that can be dressed up and down using accessories/shoes etc.
Muy main colors are black and "baby" blue ... White has also a space in muy wardrobe...and I have some clothes pieces in different colors and musters (light Green,burgundy,pots,lines,...,)...but I feel more confident when I wear black or blue...I discovery your Chanel Last week and I find very interesting the Part of the Body proportions (vertical-horizontal)...great series and Chanel!!! greetings fromm Germany 😊
Great video! Where’s that black dress from? I’d like to get something similar
Question, for Emily or someone ahead of me on this journey: if I know I’m a rectangle and I don’t have any idea my vertical proportions (I think balanced?) how should I educate myself on what to wear without losing myself on a RUclips side quest??
I love your videos and tips! And love to ask myself these questions so I can get my style more and more curated 😊
I’m trusting the process - it’s hard to pick 2 colors because I want to incorporate so many! Fuchsia pink and pine green. (On deck are indigo blue, red and aubergine…)
Please, where did you buy your necklace? Thanks :)
I bought a Barbour coat as a fashion item. Barbour was a company that made rain gear for military as well as workmen at sea and on land more than 100 years ago. There were work gear people could afford at that time. Come the '80s they become a fashion brand with high price tag to match by advertising it as part of an English country lifestyle fantasy complete with photos of clean people gently walking in an open field. However, who takes a $500 coat to get ripped by thorns, scorched by campfire, and bloodied by hunted deer? Before you buy anything, be true to yourself and know if you are buying for an actual need or for an image.
Bold (eye catching), Comfortable, Youthful.

Hi Emily thank you for the video series i learning so much from you . Through your video its giving thought to my closest on my style at the moment which is nine to five job 😊 yeah. Every day looking for a new look so it dose not become boring. Oh❤ Thankyou for the Work book closest download.❤ 9:31 ❤❤
What is undone? I haven't got a clue what this means. Can you explain how you look undone. You never look undone.
Natural&/comfortable Sophisticated & Asymmetric Harmonious And somewhere just a slight sprinkle of edgy/quirky I have a bit of a problem with my "three" words... Yesterday, when I styled an outfit and it sort of didn't work, I realized it was because it was too many masculine elements and I didn't feel feminine enough. And then when I looked back on my saved selfmade outfit formulas on canva I realized femininity is super important to me. So now I am thinking about if I should add femininity or if that goes under the "harmonious" category 😅 If I had to cut it down though, I think it would be natural, sophisticated and harmonious. But like, when I do that, I def feel like the three words don't represent my edgy and asymmetric style elements and like the femininity part is underexpressed. Not to mention that comfort is very important to idk if that goes under natural or harmonious or if that should be it's own word Like I know I don't have to take it superrrrr serious but still, I do 😂 so many says it is much easier to only have 3 words but for me it just makes it even more confusing 😖
This is the kind of vid I really enjoy. Lots of images, no waffle. 😊
🙏 so glad you liked it! Thank you for the feedback xox
